Drawing Newburyport History: Ethel Reed and the Gilded Age

  • Newburyport Art Association 65 Water Street Newburyport, MA 01950 USA (map)

The cast of Theater in the Open’s Lady Windermere’s Fan will be posing for Newburyport Art artists — all are welcome! There will be approximately eight models/actors in rough period aesthetic, and poses will be approximately 20 minutes in length each. In between poses, Sierra Gitlin of the Museum of Old Newbury will spend a few minutes discussing a brief history of the work and life of the enigmatic Newburyport Native: Ethel Reed.

Ethel Reed is likely the most famous Newburyport artist you’ve never heard of! Her impoverished Kent St upbringing gave no hint that Ethel Reed would one day become the pre-eminent female poster artist of the Gilded Age. At the age of 21, the beautiful and gifted Reed made her debut and achieved international acclaim, running around London in the same circles as Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley, and then all but disappeared.

This special event will take place upstairs in the NAA’s Hartson Gallery, which is currently exhibiting Life Drawing: The Figure — highlighting work from artists who have participated in the NAA’s Wednesday Night Drawing Sessions. Please note this gallery is only accessible by stairs.
