Classes and Workshops
The Newburyport Art Association is dedicated to providing quality art education programs for all ages and levels across a wide range of media taught by professional artists and educators through lectures, workshops, art classes, and exhibitions.
Since the pandemic, the NAA has worked to provide a variety of in-person and online classes/workshops. This page will contain information on upcoming sessions - whether in-person or online. Additional notice, details, and insights sometimes appear in our weekly newsletter.

Draw it Out
Draw it out is a monthly drawing opportunity at Newburyport Art in the downstairs Hills Gallery. Anyone can come and draw from 6:00 to 7:00pm on the second Tuesday of every month. Artists are encouraged to bring their own materials, but some limited supplies will be available. No registration necessary!

(6:30 - 8:30pm) $12 per session for NAA members / $15 per session for non-members
All sessions are facilitated by Claudia Mathews. Registration in advance is encouraged as capacity is limited. A variety of setups will be available, including easels, chairs, stools, and donkey benches. Artists should plan to bring their favorite materials to work with. The NAA will also try to have some basics available, such as sketch pads, artist pencils, erasers, and pastels. All sessions are held in the upper-level Hartson Gallery, accessible only by stairs.
Demo: Watercolor Discoveries with Margaret Dwyer
Thursday, July 11th, 3:30-5:30pm
$20 for NAA members / $25 non-members
Join Margaret Dwyer in the world of watercolor and all its magic. See how unconventional and traditional methods work together to create luminous, dramatic results. In this demonstration, Margaret will give an overview of materials, brushwork and color choices, as well as a variety of techniques. Learn more about the layering process, textures, negative painting, and glazing. The theme for this demonstration will focus on ocean life, such as: simple water scenes, islands, beach specimens and sea life. Wherever you are on your watercolor journey, this relaxed and informative presentation will broaden your knowledge of watercolor’s potential and encourage you to further explore this amazing medium.
