Newburyport Art highlights work from artists who have participated in our Wednesday night life drawing sessions. If you enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of the human form and how it can be expressed, you’ll want to check out this exhibition in the Hartson Gallery.
All artwork in this exhibition is for sale and directly supports the participating artists. Any commission that Newburyport Art receives goes directly back into facilitating the Wednesday Night Drawing program.
At the weekly drawing sessions, the model will typically do 10 one-minute poses, as well as 3 five-minute, 3 ten-minute, and finally 2 twenty-minute poses. To quote one of our esteemed members, Jim Tinguely, “It’s my one-minute drawings I like the best.” The one-minute poses help to loosen artists up, often yielding drawings that often have a special dynamic, abstract look to them. Artists use different mediums, such as charcoal, markers, pencil, pastel, and acrylic. For this exhibition, you’ll find work across these mediums, both showcasing work created during the weekly drawing sessions as well as figurative work created outside the sessions.
Our weekly drawing session facilitator (and Gallery Associate) Claudia Mathews has put together this breath-taking and genuinely fun collection. Participating artists for this exhibition include:

A special event — Drawing Newburyport History: Ethel Reed and the Gilded Age — is scheduled for Saturday, July 8th, from 3-5pm, featuring an open drawing session with the cast of Theater in the Open’s Lady Windermere’s Fan. The actors will be posing for artists, while Sierra Gitlin of the Museum of Old Newbury presents a brief history of the work and life of this enigmatic Newburyport native. Whether you want to draw, learn about Ethel, or just say hello and observe, everyone is welcome!
