  • Newburyport Art Association 65 Water Street Newburyport, MA 01950 USA (map)

Newburyport Art presents NAA artist Lisa Arcomano in a featured solo exhibition — Sirens & Ghosts.

From Lisa: “I paint places that touch my heart. These places find me; I don’t find them. The sandy beaches and ocean marshes of Plum Island are among my sirens. I am also drawn to the remote Italian hilltop town of Roccanova, where my paternal grandfather was born. Here, ancestral ghosts call to me from ancient streets and from the mountainous surrounding countryside, dotted with vineyards and olive groves.”

  • "Born in NYC, I studied fine arts at Cornell University and received a BA in art history in 1978 from Barnard College, Columbia University. In 1981, I received an MA in art history from the University of Chicago. Although my passion has always been the making of art, my livelihood was the care and interpretation of it.

After a career working in art museums, I retired in 2018 to focus on my own art-making, which I had put on “the back burner” for decades. My museum experience includes the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, where I was Associate Director of the Research Center, the Rubin Museum of Art (RMA) in NYC, where I was Manager of Collections and Exhibitions, and, most recently, the Princeton University Art Museum, where I oversaw the University’s campus art collections.

I moved to Newburyport, Massachusetts, just when the Covid epidemic began. The solitude helped propel my “second act” career as an artist, and my creative drive and enthusiasm haven’t slowed since.

I’ve exhibited in numerous group exhibitions at the Newburyport Art Association since moving to Massachusetts and was included in two juried exhibitions at the Marblehead Arts Association. In 2022, the Hemphill Family Foundation awarded me the “Art Adventure Grant,” which I used to spend two months in Roccanova, Basilicata, Italy, creating a series of watercolors based on my stay. From July 19 through August 4, I’ve been offered a Featured Artist exhibition at the Newburyport Art Association."
