Member Spotlight | Robert Sahakian: Night and Fog

  • Newburyport Art Association 65 Water Street Newburyport, MA 01950 USA (map)

The Member Spotlight series at Newburyport Art is a new initiative, featuring a solo showcase of work in the newly designated Mural Gallery — the hallway and staircase bridging the downstairs Sargent Gallery and upstairs Hartson Gallery.

The current Member Spotlight is on NAA Artist Member and Photography Interest Group Member Robert Sahakian, who presents “Night and Fog” — a hauntingly beautiful collection of photographs. More of Robert’s work can be found online at rsj1360.myportfolio.com.

  • “I have found myself gravitating toward photographs highlighting the night and/or fog. The city lights, neon, street lamps, or even the moon can literally spotlight subjects. Fog can focus attention on the few subjects that may be clearly visible. However, both environments can also add to the drama of an image through what cannot be clearly seen. At night and in the fog, a photographer can feel isolated and alone with what they are trying to capture. The feelings of isolation can come through in the final image. On the other hand, these conditions can make the photographer feel glaringly obvious and on stage as they stand out from the surroundings. It may be more subtle, but the feelings of vulnerability may also be conveyed in the photograph. In short, using night and/or fog in photography, and making photographs in these conditions, represents the crux of what photography means to me technically, artistically, and emotionally.”

  • “I have been making photographs since the spring of 2019, but I have had a life-long interest in the subject. Initially, I was drawn to landscape, nature, and wildlife photography. More recently, I have been concentrating more on the built environment, both in daytime, and particularly at night. Additionally, I dabble in macro, abstract, and more minimalist styles. Each genre of photography has its own specific challenges and rewards. I hope to be able to grow and improve in the types of photographs I have been taking as well as explore new, to me, styles..”
