Newburyport Art presents Pleinly Noted, a Featured Artist solo exhibition by NAA Master Artist member Maria Nemchuk. On view in the Hills Gallery, Maria Nemchuk’s Pleinly Noted focuses on her en plein air work that she began creating during the early Covid pandemic in 2020. Maria’s exhibition was originally scheduled for the summer of 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic. She writes that, “in a way, I’m glad it was, because the focus of my work changed during the pandemic”. The isolation in the early days of the pandemic pushed her to find comfort in nature, and hone in on painting en plein air. This exhibition is composed of her notes, observations, and her journey, ‘pleinly noted’.
Be sure to visit during the public Opening Reception & Party on the show’s opening night, Friday, December 8th (6-8 pm). It’s the perfect time to meet Maria and learn more about these incredible works. The reception is free and open to the public with light refreshments provided, and coincides with the City of Newburyport’s 2nd Invitation Night.

Maria’s artistic inspirations come from the world that surrounds her.
She paints a wide variety of subjects — landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. She loves painting au plein air and does it year round. “When you paint outside, you are surrounded by smells, sounds, and ever changing light. You are challenged — everything is calling for your attention.”
Maria studied with many contemporary artists; most extensively with Tom Ouellette (from whom she learned how to paint portraits and figures in a classical manner, following the old masters techniques) and Mark Hayden, CM (who taught her to paint her first portraits and instilled love for painting en plein air).
