The Member Spotlight series at Newburyport Art is a new initiative, featuring a solo showcase of work in the newly designated Mural Gallery — the hallway and staircase bridging the downstairs Sargent Gallery and upstairs Hartson Gallery. The current spotlight is on John Kessler, who presents By Land and By Sea.

Through a variety of oil paintings, I share my artistic interpretation of the beauty of New England.
By land — I particularly enjoy the woods, trails, rivers, and lakes of rural New England. Getting back to nature at its finest! Working farms and aging barns always seem to catch my eye, providing subject matter for a nostalgic reminder of life in the area not too long ago.
By sea — The ever changing image of light on the water makes the coast a wonderful place to create paintings. There always seems to be that special feeling at the water’s edge. Through my paintings, I hope to capture a unique scene or moment for others to enjoy that might otherwise go unnoticed.
