Jefferson took great pride in his library and while he didn’t write many margin notes he initialed most of his books in this fashion. In this particular book the printer had placed the letter T at the bottom of the page and Jefferson wrote next to it a neat .J.
This image is part of a larger series entitled Finding Freedom which examines Revolutionary era artifacts and history through the camera lens, particularly the libraries of Jefferson in D.C. and John Adams in Boston.
