Rime of the Ancient Mariner came about when my son and I collected some whale bones while kayaking off of Great Island in Wellfleet. I had kept the bones for a number of years, and finally they spoke to me in a way to incorporate them into a mosaic work of art. Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem resonates deeply within me as a daughter, niece and granddaughter of fishermen growing up in Gloucester. The imagery of harsh winter on the water, the sorrow of loss, the weight of the albatross and finally the understanding of the relationship between God and nature is metaphoric to many. My artwork is inspired by that reflection, a renewal of lost bones given a new purpose and meaning.
