- Workshop Series with Julia Bethmann
March 23, 2019 - June 15, 2019
9:00 am - 11:00 am
Intro to Gelli Printing, Saturday, March 23rd, 9:00-11:00a.m.
A Gelli plate is a gelatin-based printing plate that is very easy to work with and requires limited tools and supplies. It is a fun tool to make a stack of collage papers or even monotypes suitable for framing. Beginners and experienced artists can enjoy the range of techniques available when printing with the Gelli Plate.
The focus of this class will be to experiment with mark making, resist exercises, and other methods for making patterns using the plate. We will learn about the materials and then spend some time working on our gelli plates. We will talk about what you can do with all of your gelli prints too! Students will leave with some prints as well as a good understanding of how to have fun using their Gelli Plates at home. Registered students will receive a supply list of items to bring to the workshop.
Intro to Bookbinding – Pamphlet and long-stitch, Saturday, April 20th, 9:00-11:00a.m.
If you have ever thought about making your own handmade book or journal, this is the class for you. Students will learn about the parts and tools used in bookbinding to make a personal sketchbook, diary, or special gift. We will explore using a mix of papers, old book pages, scrapbook papers, as well as plain drawing paper as the pages in our journals. In this class, we will discuss the parts of a book and make a Long-Stitch bound book using an old hardcover book cover which we will deconstruct and then fill with our own mix of creative papers.
Registered students will receive a supply list of items to bring to the workshop.
Self Portrait Vision Board Collage, Saturday, May 18th, 9:00-11:00a.m.
We will design a vision board with “self-portrait” as the central theme. Students will use magazine images of faces to create a fantastic self-portrait. Surrounding their portrait, they will layer colors, patterns, and images that will become a vision board with hopes and dreams for the future, or they can simply celebrate their favorite parts of life.
Students can work on a sheet of mixed media paper or in a journal that they bring to class. If you attended the bookbinding class, be sure to bring what your journal! We will use glue sticks and/or other forms of adhesive. I will show students how to incorporate paint and mark making as well.
Registered students will get a supply list of items to bring to the workshop.
Introduction to Visual Journaling, Saturday, June 15, 9:00-11:00a.m.
Visual journaling can be a great tool to record memories, process thoughts, or just get the creative juices flowing before starting a larger project. Many artists keep a visual journaling practice as a daily method of checking in and centering the mind.
In this class we will be encouraged to use the handmade book and collage papers from previous lessons. If you did not attend those classes, do not worry… a supply list will be provided. We will explore 2-3 different visual journaling exercises including resist, collage, and repetitive imagery. This class may just convince you to start a visual journaling practice at home! Registered students will get a supply list of items to bring to the workshop.
