The second of two works completed in 2015 depicting snow, this drawing is based on a photograph taken after the second big snow storm of 2015 – we had four on four consecutive weekends. The location is Maudsley State Park in Newburyport. The photo was taken on the second anniversary of my mother’s death, and reminds me of a work of mine she prized most – a watercolor of Vermont hills completed while I was in college.

What I tried to depict in this work is the various textures of the setting – the peeling bark of the tree, the smooth maples, and the rough snow in the foreground – a result of a snow plow clearing snow from the street onto the pasture – the leafless trees in the background and the clear, blue, cold winter sky. But what captivated me the most was the textural transitions from bottom to top and foreground to background.
