The Way We See It – Representational Art in Diverse Media

Leslie Doherty is a multi-media artist concentrating in oils. She is a full-time artist and owns a gallery on Route 1 in York. Leslie was born and brought up on the New England coast and it is there that she always finds her inspiration to paint. She is known mostly for her landscapes and landscape/ marine paintings. “Enthusiasm in painting what you know is always the key to expression,” she says. Light and composition are the two basic elements she looks for before beginning a painting. Leslie attended the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and majored in painting and design. She worked with Elyot Henderson teaching the first art program at York High School, and she served on the Board of Directors of the York Art Association. Leslie has studied with Robert Brackman, William Preston, Elyot Henderson, and George Carpenter.

Phil McCurdy, a retired headmaster, science teacher and illustrator, is a member of the York (Me.) and the Newburyport (Ma.) Art Associations. He is a juried member of the International Society of Marine Painters and the Art Guild of the Kennebunks. He has taught a popular beginning Adult Ed acrylics class, You Can Paint, in both York and Wells. His approach to full-color acrylic composition is significantly informed by earlier black and white, pen-and-ink scientific illustrating work. “Representing realistically the anatomy and structure of coastal things fascinates him: rocks, waves, pools, clouds, beach sand, as well as objects on and around them: spray, foam, littoral debris, and wrack lines, is fascinating” he says. When viewers comment, “Oh, we know just where that is,” or “I could climb right out on those rocks,” or when the Coast Star writes, “ McCurdy’s works capture the finite details so familiar to residents. When viewing his works, one truly feels they are physically present at the seascape locations!” he is delighted.
