As both an artist and an architect, John Strother balances his creative life between his art studio in Newbury, MA and his office in Boston, where he is an Associate Principal at CBT Architects.
BALANCE I is John's first solo exhibition at the NAA and represents the current direction of his artistic exploration. The show will feature a series of his abstract multi-layered and multi-colored three-dimensional compositions, as well as a number of the color and black and white two-dimensional studies which form the basis for his finished pieces. All of John's work, whether it be a quick study or a finished construction, develops a conversation about balance balance within the overall structure of the composition, balance between the colors and the textures, and balance in the spatial relationships created by the disparate elements of the piece. In this show, John will also investigate and play with ways in which the compositions can balance in relation to the ground plane supporting them and in relation to each other.
In describing his work, John says, “I feel my artwork is most successful when the observer's eye moves in a continuous, uninterrupted loop around the piece without fixing on or being distracted by any one particular element or aspect of the composition. When I can create that level of balance, I feel the work has achieved what I intended. I hope you will be able to come and explore my colorful and playful world of BALANCE I in early August.”
