DRAW! This 6 week class will focus on the fundamental techniques and concepts of representational and expressive drawing. Students will explore the basic building blocks of a great drawing; line and tone, values, positive and negative space, perspective and proportion. Other fundamentals will be taught such as understanding different drawing tools, different techniques for creating value, various paper surfaces for effect, and hopefully many other tips and insights. We will be drawing everything from life. This is the best way to learn drawing.
Class is recommended for beginning drawers. For students with experience, Fundamentals of Drawing Level 2 is recommended.

About the Instructor –
Susan Spellman started her art career as a staff illustrator at a filmstrip company after getting a BA in art from Marymount College in NY. She next worked as a freelance illustrator of children’s books and magazines, and has illustrated more than 30 books to date. While continuing to work as an illustrator and a portrait artist, Susan has been focusing more attention in the last 10 years on her own work as a painter. Her primary interest is to capture those fleeting moments when the combination of light and color feels magical and all the elements combine to create a story. She works primarily on site, painting “en plein air” in oil paint on either canvas or panels. The inspiration for her work comes primarily from the richness of the natural world in and around the Newburyport area.
Susan has been a member of the Newburyport Art Association since 1996, and a member of the “Newburyport 10” Plein Air Painters. She has a studio in Newburyport and exhibits in galleries and venues throughout the New England area.
