- Face and Figure: Portrait and Figure Drawing from a clothed model
September 22, 2017 - October 27, 2017
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Looking for a way to hone your figure drawing skills? This 6-week class will feature a clothed model each week. Students may use their choice of working solely on the portrait or drawing the whole figure. There will be a short demo at the start of class each week which will cover one aspect of the anatomy of the face or figure as well as materials and techniques. Poses will start at 1 to 5 minute warm up poses and then progress to 20-minute segments. Students are encouraged to bring whatever medium they would like to work in, pencil, charcoal, pastel as well as whatever paper they wish to use. Drawing boards are a helpful item for each student to have as their own to bring, but the NAA has some to use if needed.

About the Instructor – Susan Spellman started her art career as a staff illustrator at a filmstrip company after getting a BA in art from Marymount College in NY. She next worked as a freelance illustrator of children’s books and magazines, and has illustrated more than 30 books to date. The majority of her illustrations were created in watercolor and colored pencil, or a combination of the two. While continuing to work as an illustrator and a portrait artist, Susan has been focusing more attention in the last 10 years on her own work as a painter. She works primarily on site, painting “en plein air” in oil paint on either canvas or panels. She has also been focused on creating a body of work with dancers as the subject matter.
Susan has been a member of the Newburyport Art Association since 1996, and a member of the “Newburyport 10” Plein Air Painters. She has a studio in Newburyport and exhibits in galleries and venues throughout the New England area.
